Yacht Aground
Date:
Thursday 24th March - 18:02
Details:
Unable to see the channel into the marina due to the low, bright sunlight, a yacht hit a sandbank in Langstone harbour on a receding tide, grounding the yacht. The D Class lifeboat was launched to assist. As the keel had already sunk into the sand and it was not possible to pull the yacht free, the crew secured the yachts anchor south of the stricken yacht, so that it would be positioned appropriately when the yacht re-floats later with the incoming tide. The 2 persons onboard were reluctant to leave the vessel, and were happy that they had the appropriate gear onboard to spend the night there. Having advised them that they should call the Coastguard if they have any further problems, the crew returned to station.

Lobster Pot Caught On Yacht Prop
Date:
Saturday 26th February - 13:32
Details:
A 33ft Sigma had got a lobster pot line caught around its rudder, and not wanting to start the engine for fear of getting the line caught around the propeller, was drifting perilously close to the submarine barrier with a strong running tide of about 6 knots. When the lifeboat took the yacht under tow it was only 50 feet from the submerged concrete blocks. Having freed the rudder from the lobster pot and the tow safely under way, an attempt to start the engine was made. However, sea water was found to be running into the engine bay and the yacht was towed to Gosport Marina in Portsmouth Harbour so that it could be checked over and any necessary repairs could be made.

Date:
Saturday 19th February - 15:01

A motor boat had engine failure at the entrance to langstone harbour. With a fast flowing spring tide running at around 8 knots, the casualty had concerns that they would be pushed onto or under the small pier at the outfall, or be washed out to sea. They raised the alarm and the lifeboat was launched shortly after. During this time the casualty managed to remove air from the fuel line and restarted the engine just as the lifeboat arrived on scene. The lifeboat escorted the boat to the Hayling ferry pontoon and assist with mooring it there.
